Mimimize your TV time

November 2006 - Oslo.

People owning a TV should be very careful about complaining

People spending a lot of time passively infront of the TV have no right to complain about their life or about stuff going on around them.

The TV is one of the most time consuming devices in our current civilization. There are other things that also take up quite amount of time, such as work, getting to and from work, getting drunk, recovering from the hangover. These other things would be interesting to shed some light on, but in this article the time spent on watching TV will be in focus.

The cost of TV

The cost of Television watching is primarly in the form of time. Your spear time is one of the most valuable assets you have and this asset is wasted if you watch TV. In Norway there is also the mandatory Tv tax of about 2100 NOK ($323 USD). You have to pay this money if you own a TV.

My proposal for your 2100 NOK and the endless amount of hours

My proposal for your 2100 NOK and the enormous amount of hours spent watching TV is to put them to a different use. My proposal is to invest the time and money into educating yourself. Use the money to buy books and spend the time reading them. On Amazon.com you get a lot of good books for $15 and that is approximately 21 books a year.

Tv time is lost into nothing

Can you remember any defining moments on TV last year. Chances are that you can remember very little of what you have watched. Maybe the finally of your favorite reality show, but that is all. This time is tiny pieces of yourself that you will never get back.

If you on the other side read a lot of quality books you will become smarter. And an interesting book often sit much better in your memory that some flickering moments infront of the TV.

But you are lazy

The reason why people are watching so much TV is that they are lazy. They can not find effort to do anything else than to watch TV. Reading books takes effort. If you want to get from one plataue to another it will require energy. Lazy people settles for status quo.

What books to read

I am not a big fan of books where the author cooks up a fictional story, let it be crime, thriller or romance. There are some classics you should familiarize yourself with, but stay clear of the constant stream of books coming off the production line. These are mostly also waste of time.

I am a big fan of books written by monumental personalities. Let it be biographies or books were they tell about what they do or have experienced. Or where they teach what they do. The things that sets these books apart from fiction, are that the stories have actually happened and that the persons and experiences that are told are real. And there is a lot to learn about conclusions drawn from their experiences.
